White gold opal in 925 sterling silver ring stg.sh
Independent Retail Replacement Valuation: $7,700
SKU: E24752
An exceptional piece of Edwardian-era jewellery, this substantial handmade 18ct yellow gold serpent ring was hallmarked in Chester in 1903 and combines wonderful symbolism, antique craftsmanship and two beautiful gemstones.
The entwined double-serpent design features two opposing heads, one set with a 0.18ct Old European cut diamond and the other with a 0.25ct oval cut sapphire. The sculptural openwork heads and sweeping gold curves create an impressive ring with considerable presence.
Serpent jewellery became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period, where the snake was associated with eternity and enduring love. This tradition continued into the Edwardian era, making this 1903 example a wonderful survivor from the period.
The Old European cut diamond, an historic predecessor to today's modern brilliant cut, has the softer proportions and individual character prized in antique jewellery. It is assessed as I colour and SI clarity.
Its companion sapphire provides a beautiful contrast, bringing a rich touch of blue against the warmth of the yellow gold.
At approximately 10.2 grams, this is a particularly substantial antique ring and an impressive piece for the collector of historic jewellery.
